The Commerce Insurance Company (MAPFRE Insurance) Data Breach
Maxey Law Firm is investigating The Commerce Insurance Company (MAPFRE Insurance), which recently sent notice of a data breach to impacted individuals. The notice states that the data breach arose when, between July 1 and July 2, 2023, an unknown party used information about affected individuals – which was already in the unknown party’s possession – to obtain access to additional information about affected individuals through MAPFRE’s Massachusetts online quoting platform in Massachusetts.
MAPFRE reported that the data breach affected 266,142 individuals.
For each of these 266,142 individuals, the information involved may have included their name, driver’s license number, and/or information regarding vehicles, including make, model, year, and vehicle identification number.
The notice does not state whether or not the driver’s license numbers and other sensitive information were encrypted and, if not, why they were not encrypted.
